Connecting the Internet of Things

The Internet of Things aims to connect the world.  While IoT is in its infancy, advances are upon us that can facilitate connecting many more things than ever before.

Right now “things” connect many ways. Cellular networks, Wi-Fi and Bluetooth already connect your cars, speakers, fitness trackers and more.

Low power networks use existing cellular networks for a range of industrial applications like smart utility meters, pollution monitors and smoke detectors. There are also satellites that can reach remote areas around the globe.

We’re working at AT&T with technology leaders to pilot LTE-M technology tailor-made to connect “things” to our 4G LTE network. We plan to make the technology available across our commercial network next year.

Key features expected from LTE-M are:

  • Lower costs for modules that connect IoT devices to the LTE network.
  • Longer battery life; up to 10 years for certain enabled IoT devices.
  • Better coverage for IoT devices underground and deep inside buildings.


We can see that demand to connect “things” is growing as costs come down and technology advances. That’s why we’re moving forward now with new approaches to make connectivity virtually ubiquitous and improve the way we live and work.
